La Soufriere Volcano which rises majestically to over 4,000 feet is located in the mountainous northern section of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and is perhaps the most spectacular of the active volcanoes in the Caribbean, and promoted as one of St. Vincent and the Grenadines' major attractions for visitors interested in Adventure/Eco-Tourism.
This full-day hike to La Soufriere volcano is both exhilarating and challenging. There are two routes: via the Windward side, which
is more popular or by the Leeward route, which starts at Chateaubelair and is longer and less defined.
The Windward route is clearly marked and leaves the coastal road to Rabacca. The hike starts at Bamboo Range. The first stage ofthe
hike takes you through a lowland forest with patches of cultivation and then into a tropical rain forest with a profusion of tree ferns, tall
trees festooned with bromeliads, Iianas and moist shade dappled with sunlight.
You emerge from the shade into a zone of vegetation stunted by the altitude; breeze and frequent cloud cover and continue to an alpine-like zone before scrambling up the last stretch to the crater itself.
There is a path into the crater that offers further adventure for the energetic.
Although the track is well-marked, a guide is recommended and essential if you take the route on the Leeward side.
La Soufriere is 26 miles from the capital. The drive from Kingstown takes about one and a half hours. The ascent to the crater is
approximately 3 miles.
La Soufriere Volcano last erupted in April 1979.
